Now, the studio is trying to present Super Mario in movie form. Before watching the movie, let’s understand some background about Super Mario.

Mario History

Mario was created in 1981 by Shigeru Miyamoto. He preferred storytelling based on simple narratives like love triangles, which influenced early game ideas.

Initially, he planned to create a game based on Popeye the Sailor Man. However, due to licensing issues, this was not possible.
As a result, he created new characters: Jumpman, Donkey Kong, and Pauline, who replaced Popeye, Bluto, and Olive Oyl.

In the original storyline, Donkey Kong was the villain who kidnapped Pauline, and Jumpman tried to rescue her by climbing upward, as suggested by his name.
However, in 1982, the story was reversed in Donkey Kong Jr., where Donkey Kong Jr. was shown as the hero, and Jumpman became the villain who had captured Donkey Kong.

Around the early 1980s, the video game industry was declining. Many companies were producing a large number of low-quality games, and very few were considered good. At the same time, many expensive gaming consoles entered the market, which created confusion among consumers.

Due to poor sales, many games were sold at very low prices. However, this period marked a turning point for Nintendo. While the American gaming market was crashing, the Japanese market was growing.

In 1985, Nintendo released Super Mario Bros., which became extremely popular worldwide.
The character Jumpman was renamed “Mario,” inspired by a real person who owned a warehouse where Nintendo stored its products.
