Recently, the trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 has been released. The movie is an adaptation of the famous fighting game franchise Mortal Kombat...
.Many people have played Mortal Kombat games, but very few actually know the deeper story behind the Mortal Kombat universe. The lore of Mortal Kombat is much deeper than just a fighting tournament. In this article, we will try to explain as much of the Mortal Kombat story as possible so that when you watch the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie, you can understand the story and characters much better.
Let's begin by exploring the true story of Mortal Kombat.
The Origin of the Mortal Kombat Universe
Long ago, before the universe existed, there was only a powerful cosmic entity known as The One Being.
The One Being existed in a cosmic void alongside the Elder Gods. However, the One Being wanted to become more powerful. To achieve this, it slowly began consuming the essence of the Elder Gods, increasing its own strength.
The Elder Gods tried many times to defeat the One Being in battle, but they failed repeatedly. After countless wars, the Elder Gods finally succeeded in defeating the One Being. However, they were unable to completely destroy it.
Instead, they shattered the One Being into six pieces.
These pieces became the different realms of the Mortal Kombat universe. Each realm received a powerful artifact known as the Kamidogu, which is also known as the Blood of the One Being.
The major realms created were:
- Earthrealm
- Outworld
- Edenia
- Netherrealm
- Orderrealm
- Chaosrealm
Even though the One Being was divided into pieces, its consciousness still remained alive.
Because of this, ambitious conquerors have attempted to merge the realms together. If all realms merge again, the One Being could be reborn and consume the entire universe.
Two famous examples of such conquerors are Shao Kahn and Shinnok.
The Rules of Mortal Kombat and How It Prevents the One Being’s Return

| The Mortal Kombat tournament follows strict rules created by the Elder Gods to maintain balance between realms. |
Many rulers tried to conquer other realms to increase their power. To stop this chaos, the Elder Gods created the Mortal Kombat tournament.
They also created several rules to maintain balance between the realms.
Rule 1: No Direct Invasion
A realm cannot directly invade another realm to conquer it. Instead, it must challenge the other realm to a Mortal Kombat tournament.
Rule 2: Ten Consecutive Victories
A realm must win 10 Mortal Kombat tournaments consecutively before it can legally conquer another realm.
Rule 3: Each Realm Selects Champions
Every realm selects its champions who fight in the tournament on behalf of their realm.
Rule 4: Elder Gods Supervise the Tournament
The Elder Gods observe every tournament to ensure the rules are followed and no cheating occurs.
If anyone breaks these rules, the Elder Gods can punish them.
Guardian Gods and Their Responsibilities

A Guardian God's responsibilities include:
- Protecting their realm
- Selecting champions
- Training warriors for Mortal Kombat
For example, the protector of Earthrealm is Raiden, the God of Thunder. Guardian Gods must follow strict rules:
- They must follow the rules of Mortal Kombat
- They cannot invade other realms
- Their duty is protection, not conquest
Normally, Guardian Gods cannot participate in Mortal Kombat directly. They only guide and train warriors.
However, they can fight if:
- There is an illegal invasion
- The Elder Gods allow it
- Or they give up their divine status and fight as a normal warrior
Main Fighters of Earthrealm
Now that we understand the universe and the tournament rules, let's look at the main fighters of Earthrealm.
Johnny Cage
Johnny Cage is a famous Hollywood actor who was once known for performing incredible action scenes in movies. However, over time people began believing that he used stunt doubles and that his fighting skills were fake.
To prove himself, Johnny Cage enters the Mortal Kombat tournament. At first he thinks the tournament is fake, but later he realizes that everything happening there is real.
Johnny Cage also belongs to a warrior bloodline that possesses mystical energy, which allows him to fight supernatural enemies and protect Earthrealm.
Sonya Blade
Sonya Blade is a highly trained Special Forces soldier who investigates supernatural threats. She accidentally becomes involved in the Mortal Kombat tournament while chasing a dangerous criminal named Kano.
Kano leads her to a mysterious island where the tournament is being organized by the powerful sorcerer Shang Tsung.

Kung Lao is a Shaolin monk and a descendant of the legendary Great Kung Lao, who was once Earthrealm’s champion.
Kung Lao wants to restore the honor and glory of his family. His signature weapon is his razor-sharp hat, which he uses as a deadly weapon during combat.

He was trained in martial arts by Shaolin monks from a very young age. Because of his incredible potential and discipline, the monks selected Liu Kang as one of the main protectors of Earthrealm.
He eventually becomes one of the strongest champions in the Mortal Kombat tournament.
The Story of Edenia and Outworld
Outworld
Outworld is considered one of the most dangerous realms in the Mortal Kombat universe. It is filled with many violent species such as:

Originally, the ruler of Outworld was the powerful Dragon King Onaga. However, his advisor and general Shao Kahn betrayed him by poisoning him and declaring himself the new ruler of Outworld.
After taking the throne, Shao Kahn began challenging other realms in Mortal Kombat so he could conquer them.
The Fall of Edenia
One of Shao Kahn’s greatest conquests was the beautiful realm of Edenia. During his invasion, Shao Kahn killed Edenia’s ruler King Jerrod. He then forced Jerrod’s wife Sindel to marry him.
Many people believed Sindel did this to protect her daughter Kitana and the citizens of Edenia. Kitana was still a child at the time, so Shao Kahn manipulated and trained her to fight on his side.
Later, Sindel dies, and many believed she sacrificed herself to create a magical barrier protecting Earthrealm from invasion.
Kitana and Mileena
Shao Kahn never fully trusted Kitana. He feared that she might one day discover the truth about her real family. Because of this, he ordered Shang Tsung to create a clone of Kitana. This clone became Mileena.
Mileena looks very similar to Kitana, but she has Tarkatan teeth, which is why she hides her mouth behind a mask. Shao Kahn planned to replace Kitana with Mileena if Kitana ever betrayed him.
Quan Chi’s Master Plan
Another major villain in the Mortal Kombat universe is Quan Chi. Quan Chi is a powerful necromancer and manipulator.
At first, he gains the trust of Shao Kahn and becomes one of his followers. However, his true goal is to destroy Shao Kahn so that his master Shinnok, a fallen Elder God, can rule the realms again.
It is later revealed that Quan Chi was responsible for many tragic events, including the death of Sindel. He later resurrected her and controlled her in order to weaken Earthrealm’s strongest fighters.
